Uche Ignites Dominant Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their maiden European adventure, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Missing key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding win that all but secures them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their upcoming match against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight passage to the last 16, especially following a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second beginning since joining on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season proved outmatched against a largely rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee waved away the appeals.
The formerArsenal man did not have wait long to get his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were hanging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, indicating there is still scope for development in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
